Communications & Digital Media Intern

The Sex Workers Project (SWP) at the Urban Justice Center seeks a creative, thoughtful, and digitally savvy intern or volunteer to support our communications and social media work.

SWP provides immigration legal services and advocacy for sex workers and people who have experienced trafficking. Our work sits at the intersection of immigration, sex work, anti-trafficking, LGBTQIA+ rights, and racial and economic justice. We advocate for the decriminalization of sex work and for policies that protect the dignity, safety, and rights of people in the sex trades.

SWP seeks someone who can help us create compelling, accessible content while bringing a genuine understanding of sex workers and the communities we serve.

Ideal Candidate

We are particularly interested in candidates with lived experience in the sex trades and/or deep knowledge of and relationships with sex-worker communities.

The ideal candidate understands the unique challenges sex workers face online and offline, including criminalization, stigma, platform censorship, content moderation, shadow banning, payment restrictions, and digital surveillance.

Responsibilities may include:

• Creating visually compelling social media content, including graphics, infographics, carousels, reels, and other short-form content
• Developing accessible and engaging content that communicates SWP’s immigration legal work and mission
• Helping translate complex legal and advocacy issues into clear, accurate, and compelling digital content
• Creating and editing short-form video and, where appropriate, longer-form community-centered storytelling
• Researching developments related to immigration, sex work, trafficking, LGBTQIA+ rights, and criminalization to support communications
• Supporting communications that help demonstrate SWP’s impact and accomplishments to donors, funders, and community partners

Qualifications & Experience

• Strong visual design skills and an eye for creating polished, beautiful, and engaging digital content

• Ability to communicate SWP’s work in a way that is polished and accessible to a wide range of audiences, including our clients and community, funders and donors, attorneys and legal-service providers, partner organizations

• Experience using Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or comparable design tools
• Experience creating social media content for Instagram and/or other platforms

• Experience with social media strategy or digital organizing
