Every year, the Urban Justice Center helps thousands of low- and no-income New Yorkers with their legal problems, while simultaneously releasing reports, bringing litigation, and pursuing legislative change to address the root causes of poverty and inequality in our system.
Take Ms. W., who knew that there must be better options for her young family, than choosing between feeding her children every night and making her SNAP (food stamp) assistance last for the entire month. As a last resort, Ms. W. came to our legal clinic on the Upper West Side. Our staff deduced that a combination of administrative errors and policy changes were responsible for a series of crippling benefit reductions. We represented Ms. W. at an administrative hearing and were able to restore the majority of her lost benefits. On behalf of the hundreds of thousands of other families who face similar circumstances due to policy failures, the UJC leverages individual legal problems like these to fight for systemic change.
Every year, UJC helps thousands of people like Ms. W.— and yet there is so much more work to be done. Help us deepen and broaden our impact.
Even a small donation can make a big difference in the life of someone like Ms. W.
