Part-Time Grassroots Outreach Worker – Freedom Agenda

Position Description
Freedom Agenda is seeking a part-time grassroots outreach worker to help with outreach for base building, direct actions, and events. Our work will be focused on securing the closure of Rikers Island, divesting from systems of punishment to reinvest those resources in communities that have been historically under-resourced and overly criminalized. The outreach worker will be conducting outreach consisting of canvassing in communities directly impacted by criminalization and incarceration, tabling, handing out fliers, collecting and documenting contact information of potential supporters, phone banking, texting, and emailing those contacts to schedule one-to-ones with an organizer. Some of this work would consist of supporting our coalition partners’ rallies, demonstrations, and marches to decarcerate the city-wide jail system and defend the human rights of incarcerated people. The outreach worker will be supervised by a Freedom Agenda staff member.
We are seeking candidates with the following qualities:
- Interest in learning about grassroots community organizing
- Knowledge of NYC and communities impacted by Rikers Island
- Comfort with initiating a conversation with people and working with a team
- Passion for social justice
- Collaborative instincts, sense of humor, and flexibility
Skills and experience you will gain:
- Exposure to base building strategies and tactics
- Development of skills and experience in canvassing
- Development of skills and experience in phone banking
- Development of communications skills
- Exposure to city and statewide policy campaigns and advocacy
Commitment & Compensation:
- 12 hours a week
- 10 weeks (beginning June 1st)
- $22-25 per hour (Depending on Experience)
