Experienced Staff Accountant

Job Summary & Qualifications:

Urban Justice Center is looking for an organized, detail oriented and energetic nonprofit experienced staff accountant. The position will be involved in most aspects of nonprofit accounting including accounts payable, grants management, audit.

Accounting

  • Maintain schedules and post entries for prepaid expenses
  • Month and year end closing process including journal entries
  • Bank Reconciliation of 5 accounts
  • Importing payroll in the accounting system
  • Reconcile receivables from City – State – Federal funding
  • Post adjusting entries
  • Perform additional duties and ad hoc as requested by management
  • Assist with audit functions, including the annual audit and 990 tax return

Accounts Payable

  • Full cycle accounts payable including vendor payments, and expense reimbursements
  • Ensure proper, accurate, and timely coding of transactions
  • Review documentation for proper invoices, receipts, award documents, banking information, etc. and communicate with staff to resolve inconsistencies
  • Set-up 1099 or tax status for vendors in accounting software system
  • Create and issue 1099 tax forms to vendors
  • Maintain vendor and accounts payable related files
  • Proactively respond to inquiries from vendors and staff
  • Monitor and correct ACH and wire payment issues with the bank

Grant administration

  • Assist Senior accountant and controller in the subcontractor process
  • Grant reporting, invoicing and GL posting
  • Run Budget vs Variance reports
  • Enter subcontractor information in PIP/HHS/Passport
  • Collect, organize, and review subcontractor invoices
  • Communicate with subcontractors on outstanding back up documentation
  • Maintain subcontractor schedule, issue payments or recoup advances
  • Communicate with funders on subcontractor invoice status
  • Assist with the annual budget process
  • Code expenses to funding sources

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance with 2 years of accounting experience
  • Proficient with using a fund accounting software such as Fund EZ, Sage intact , Netsuite
  • Proficient in excel (Vlookup, IF statements, Pivot Tables)
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize daily activities to meet competing deadlines
  • Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work well with others and collaborate effectively
  • Good analytical, interpersonal, and writing skills
  • Willingness to learn and adhere to departmental policies and procedures
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Flexibility to learn new skills and work on special projects on an as-needed basis

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Nonprofit work experience
  • Familiarity Experience with wire and ACH banking
  • Understanding of grants administration

Compensation:

$60,000 annual gross salary plus very generous UJC benefits including 401(k), exceptional medical and dental insurance, pet insurance, 20 paid vacation days, 5 paid personal days, 12 paid sick days, 11 paid holidays, early dismissal summer Fridays, and additional paid week off between Christmas and New Year’s Day.
