Development Director / Senior Development Associate

The Surveillance Technology Oversight Project is looking for an experienced non-profit development professional who can secure the financial support needed to expand our work to dismantle police surveillance. S.T.O.P. fights state and local government surveillance across New York, strengthening privacy and civil rights, and creating a model for challenging police surveillance across the globe. Our work highlights the discriminatory impact of surveillance on Muslim Americans, immigrants, the LGBTQ+ community, and communities of color, particularly the unique trauma of anti-Black policing.

The senior development associate or development director will be a part of S.T.O.P.’s core team, with primary responsibility for identifying and applying for grants, donor communication, high net worth donor identification, and generating reports to current funders. The senior development associate or development director will be expected to help build S.T.O.P.’s development staff from a single FTE into a Development Department in the next 24 months.

Responsibilities:

  • Be the first point of contact for inquiries about grants, partnerships, and sponsorships;
  • Compose communications for external donor audiences, existing donors, and foundations;
  • Coordinate gift planning projects with other staff members;
  • Track spending for restricted grants and provide record-keeping re same.
  • Produce management reports; maintain donor database; and process distributions
  • Oversee vendor payments, budget monitoring and provide day-to-day financial management;
  • Conduct research on foundations, grant solicitations, donors, and prospects;
  • Supervise other development staff; and
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • A personal commitment to dismantling systems of mass surveillance;
  • Exemplary written and oral communication skills;
  • High degree of comfort networking with funders and donors on behalf of S.T.O.P.;
  • Minimum of 4 years of non-profit development experience, including grant writing;
  • Knowledge of New York City and State politics and community-based organizations;
  • Strong problem solving, organizational, time-management, and project management skills;
  • Passion for storytelling, with the ability to transform technical and legal issues into broadly engaging, emotionally rooted, and informative narratives;
  • College degree required, graduate degree preferred; and
  • Able to nurture a sense of community and mutual support within an organization.

Compensation:

  • S.T.O.P. provides a generous benefits package, including an array of employer-funded Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance plans with no employee premium contribution.
  • Salary and title commensurate with NGO sector and experience.
