Computer Science Intern/Extern

The Surveillance Technology Oversight Project’s computer science interns will gain hands-on experience using technology to empower activism and fight for civil rights. Interns will help S.T.O.P. educate the public on cutting edge technologies like facial recognition, machine learning, and neural networks. They will also develop web presence and automation integrations, potentially contributing code to ongoing technical activism projects.
Qualifications:
- Current enrollment in (or recent graduation from) an undergraduate or graduate computer science program.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and major research databases.
- Working knowledge of web technologies such as: AWS, GCP, Cloudflare
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Clear passion for civil rights, privacy, or related technical fields.
- Preferred (not required): technical understanding of current and proposed surveillance tools (e.g. ISMI Catchers “Stingrays”, Facial Recognition, Biometrics ID, etc.)
- Preferred (not required): experience with AI modeling tools/technologies and python
- Preferred (not required): experience with back-end web application development
- Preferred (not required): minimum availability of 10 hours a week (Fall/Spring Semesters) or 20 hours a week (Summer Semester). Full time placements are always available.
