The critical element to DVP’s success has been the social work team. Any individual seeking assistance is provided a full clinical assessment. This initial inquiry may consist of a request for general information or may translate into a referral; however the majority of inquiries result in more complex needs that require our complete attention. In these instances, we provide immediate and on-going crisis counseling, and facilitate support groups focused on empowerment and stress reduction. We continue to provide on-going moral support to our clients as he or she faces the challenges of the legal forum. Where appropriate, we collaborate with mental health service providers. DVP interfaces with numerous social service agencies to assist the client in accessing available services.
In a typical month,
- 460 clients receive safety and stability support & consultation
- 200 calls to the DVP Hotline, the majority of who become clients
- 165 clients receive ongoing direct counseling
- 180 clients receive housing counseling and advocacy
START Financial Empowerment Program
In response to the fundamental need for financial independence, DVP has launched its “START” (Safe Transformation And Renewal Together), Financial Empowerment Program, which is a victim and community oriented educational curriculum which operates in two twelve week sessions per year. Additionally, DVP offers weekly financial screenings at the Brooklyn Family Justice Center weekly on Fridays.
Through START, clients receive financial literacy workshops, job readiness/career counseling and ESL workshops, to meet the needs of our clients during this current economic crisis. Additionally, START offers other short term sessions for Parenting, Child/Spousal Support and Nutrition and Wellness workshops aimed at providing ancillary support to victims and survivors.
Through our holistic approach, DVP provides survivors with greater opportunities for achieving financial self-sufficiency. Attorneys complement the clinical team by assisting survivors through community based child/spousal support clinics and intensive advocacy to provide clients with the tools necessary to obtain optimal relief in the Family Court system.
